Bobby Paycheque: Returns!!!

Greetings citizens!!!
That is correct, after TWO WHOLE MONTHS OF NO POSTS I HAVE RETURNED!!! Thanks to all the good folks on the forum for returning my faith in the website, and a special thanks to Jason Major for moderating that section of the site, a demanding job that would definately put me way over my head. Anyways, with the formalities outta the way on to the article.

The name of the game is 52!!! And I have to say, convoluted is more the name of the game. I just went through issue 22, and after this issue I NEED MORE!!! If I'm going to dig into the good'ol piggy bank every week for 3.50, give me more of what matters. It seems to get shorter every issue, less content more pictures of people standing and doing nothing, if this is suppose to give it a noir feel it feels more like For Tomorrow. *shudder

DC need to pump up the content, more of the Super Nova story, which in my opinion made issue 22 better than most thus far. I'll be back, as a certain austrian once said.

So, you're reading Bob's blog and you're wondering what does "52" mean? Is it a spin-off of "24", a code-word, a comic series, what?

52 is an ambitious series by DC Comics that tells the story of the DC Superhero universe in real-time. If it's october here, it's october there.

The story tells of the DC universe after a recent universe-shaking story called "Infinite Crisis." All the DC titles after this event jumped "One year Later", which gave creators a chance to re-define the DC Universe and give readers a new jumping-on point. This story is to show what happened during that missing year.

In the series, Superman has lost his powers as a result of Infinite Crisis. Batman and Robin have left the country for a year, looking to re-examine their mission. Wonder Woman is missing.
The Justice League have disbanded. The series is our look at the DC Universe through the eyes of some of the lesser-known characters.

Something is happening. the Word "52" actually has appeared in the comic- there is a conspiracy involving "52"...

The main characters are:

BLACK ADAM- his powers come from the Egyptian gods, he is the dictator of the country of Khandraq, somewhere near Egypt, and delivers an "eye for an eye" style of justice.

BOOSTER GOLD- came from the 25th century looking to become a superhero for fame and glory.

RALPH DIBNEY- detective who used to be the elastic, stretching hero "Elogonated Man", he is in a state of depression since his wife was killed

RENEE MONTOYA- lesbian cop from Gotham's police department

THE QUESTION- vigilante with a blank face, askings questions and looking to answers to mysteries and crimefighter

STEEL- John Henry Iron, an African-American, created a suit of armor to fight crime, he was inspired by Superman to fight for truth and justice

ADAM STRANGE- Intergalactic space adventurer

ANIMAL MAN- a man who had experiments done by aliens on him; he now finds himself connected to the animal world, and can use animal-like powers from the animals around him

STARFIRE- a princess of an alien world

BATWOMAN- Kathy Kane is a wealthy Gotham socialite/lesbian who has donned the Batwoman costume

LEX LUTHOR- criminal genius, arch-enemy of Superman, seeking to redeem himself in the public's eyes

DOC MAGNUS- scientist/creator of the Metal Men

As I go through the series, I'll explain more. hope this is a decent intro- more can be found on

SUPERMAN SEQUEL A GO!

Variety reports that Bryan Singer has signed a deal with Warner Bros. to make a sequel to Superman Returns, which is tentatively due for summer 2009. This deal means that they will be starting soon on the pre-development stage (ex. writing a script, etc.) Bryan Singer promises more action, like "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan", and possibly an alien menace. (rumours suggest Brainaic, Zod or another villain)

SUPERHERO CORNER BOX #1

Welcome, welcome to my comic reviews! it's only fitting to start with a #1 issue- so:

SUPERMAN: CONFIDENTIAL #1
WRITER: DARWYN COOKE
ARTIST: TIM SALE
STORY: A 'year one' story re-introducing the first time Superman encountered Kryptonite. In this issue, Superman fights the Royal Flush Gang, then Clark, Lois, Perry & Jimmy investigate a crooked casino owner.

REVIEW: THIS is what Superman should be about- iconic battles, easy-to-follow continuity, Superman doing super things (grabbing a TRUCK, for example) plus some wonderful character development with Lois, Jimmy, Perry & Clark. Oh my goodness, you get to see investigative reporters ACTUALLY DOING INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING. Wow. You even get a nice, silly romantic scene between Superman/Lois.

Tim Sale did the acclaimed "Superman: For all Seasons" story and his art made me feel like it was capturing the feel of the '40's.

This is a MUST for Superman fans.

SUPERHERO CORNER BOX #2

ACTION COMICS #844
WRITER: GEOFF JOHNS & RICHARD DONNER
ARTIST: ADAM KUBERT:
STORY: A ship carrying a young child from Krypton lands on Earth..what will Superman do???

REVIEW: Richard Donner, as in the guy who directed the first two Christopher Reeve movies co-writing a Superman comic. THIS IS A TITLE FOR ANYONE WHO EVER LOVED THE SUPERMAN MOVIE TO BUY!!!
If you have never picked up a comic, this is a great starting point.

The story has a Kryptonian boy land on Earth- he's about 5 or 6, surprisingly, he reminds me a lot like Jason (the kid from Superman Returns) Will he be called Jason? I don't know, don't care. I personally think if Bryan Singer wanted to introduce a super-kid, this is a better way than having Superman have an illegimate child.

Great action, and great character movements. The story acts like it's a cinematic adaptation of a lost Christopher Reeves movie. You can hear the music and see the actors in your mind as you read it.

My review? 5/5

BoxofficeWizard writes:

perhaps it because that we expect the movie to make 52 million dollars...

...on opening day alone..

Jason Major said...

ComicFan52 writes:

THAT makes sense! Perhaps watching this movie will solve the mystery of 52...which continuity is this? Earth-T? Earth-M? Earth-N? Earth-T?

The Ninja Turtles met Archie back in the 90's, who met Punisher (and somehow, lived) who met Batman (both the Jean-Paul Valley "Knightfall/Knightquest" Batman
AND Bruce Wayne Batman whp, in turn, met Predator and the Aliens.

Ninja Turtles also met Savage Dragon, who met Superman, who knows Batman, thus setting TMNT in the DC multiverse.

Does this mean the multiverse is still alive????

Wow! I got to see this movie now!
It could hold the secret of 52!!!

Dr. Edward Grammer says:

Ahem. I find the use of grammar used in this here conversation to be not of the kind that makes up a conversation between two individuals that benefits mankind and appeals to human reason.

For the benefit of humanity, I appeal to you that we should all speak in a scholarly way as befits Western philosophers, so that we, by human reason, may be able to talk to each other in a way that better communicates our values, beliefs and ideas to other people.

I propose that we use the scholarly method of english to talk to each other in a way that appeals to human reason but allows for a conversation of increasingly intellectual debate, inquiry and study from a scholastic perspective.

Jason Major said...

ComicFan52 says:

I wonder how this applies to 52.

Jason Major said...

Cowabunga74 says:

Whoa! Dude, this like has nothing to do with comics whatsoever! I don't know about you guys, but it sounded like those dudes were totally hitting on sweet Jessica! NOT cool dude!

As for you scholastic dude, if you don't like our grammar, go to some scholastic website..this is a website for comic fans!

Hey, man, let's talk about COMICS- whose up for seeing TMNT again??

Jason Major said...

Dr. Edward Grammar says:

I find TMNT to not be a topic of interest to a professional on anthropology, sociology, psychology, philosophy and science such as myself.

Comic books are not a form of intelligent conversation, they do not invoke proper intellecutally stimulating conversation of subject matters that appeal to human reason and benefit mankind. Mankind learns by appealing to human reason and by the studies of science, not by engaging in such foolish entreprises as the reading of comics. I propose that you give up childish ways to pursue the greater path of enlightment through the pursuit of knowledge and science.
